The company originated in 1978 when Philip Webster co-founded a recording studio in South Melbourne after gaining experience as a sound engineer working in Melbourne, Adelaide and London. The studio went on to earn wide recognition for creativity and technical expertise, winning many local and international awards.

In 2002, following the retirement of his partner, Philip re-established the business as Risk Sound, focusing on upgrading the facilities and building a fresh team.

We are involved in a variety of sound production projects, including radio and television commercials, animated films, shorts, corporate videos, documentaries, multimedia, television series, theatre productions and original music.

Our services range from advising on sound ideas at the script stage, producing, providing sound design and direction, casting of voice artists, recording of specific sounds (foley and sound effects), sound editing, post-syncing voice tracks, composing or coordinating original music, mixing, re-striping, through to conversion and digital deli

There are three main audio production studios at your disposal, together with two project studios that also cater for global linkups, auditions and other audio assignments.

Project studio 4

We're always ready for the inevitable last-minute changes and the urgent requests. When the main studios are busy, Project studio 4 is perfect for recording pick-ups and making alterations in time to meet your deadlines. The workstation is equipped with the same ProTools rig as in all our studios.

Casting can be key to producing a track that's out of the ordinary. We thrive on sourcing voice artists who can breathe life into words and then add that extra bit of magic. We have built up an extensive bank of voice artists and we're always discovering new talent.

We're more than happy to get involved at the concept stage of your scripts. Have a chat to us about the type of voices you have in mind and how you'd like the words expressed. Do you want a voice that can spice up the words or instil a sense of authority, or quirkiness?

Utilise our ISDN or Source-Connect facilities to record digital-quality sound from studios around the world. It means you can cast a genuine Cockney in London, a tough guy in the Bronx or an Italian mama in Rome and come into our studio to record and produce the track.

If your favourite voice artist happens to be interstate or overseas, there's every chance we'll be able to find a studio they can visit to record your track via linkup to us. If you're out of town, your track can still be recorded at our place.

The three main studios are all equipped with the latest ProTools digital facilities.

As well as the other essentials you'd expect to find in a professional recording facility, we have an extensive digital library of sound effects that we've designed, recorded and collected over many years.

Managing Director

Philip has been part of the local advertising industry for over 40 years.

Studio Manager / Producer

Kath has spent more than 25 years in the industry, working as a producer and facilities or studio manager for most of them, including playing a key role in the launch of two hugely successful studios. Since joined us in 2002, Kath has been managing our studios and facilities and working on everything from voice casting through to original music production. As well as her boundless energy and good humour, Kath has earned recognition for her production knowledge and work ethic and is well respected for her up-front approach to managing the complexities o

Producer

For several years now, Kate has specialised as a producer in audio post-production. Coming from a family that has worked in the industry for many years, it's no wonder that Kate has had a keen interest in production and music from a young age.

Senior Sound Designer

Three Gold, one Silver and four Bronze Cannes Lions, D&AD Yellow Pencils, AWARD Awards, MADC Silver and London International Awards. Those are just some of the more than 60 awards won by commercials and campaigns that Paul has been involved in as sound designer, leading to invitations for him to judge the Clio, Loerie and Art Directors Club of New York awards. Paul commenced his career in the recording industry in 1993 and, before joining us in mid 2008, spent nine years at Sonovision Studios in South Africa, the last four as managing director.

Senior Sound Designer

Dylan radiates enthusiasm for sound and goes to great lengths to achieve an exceptional result. He knows how to bring radio and television tracks to life, and no wonder. Dylan grew up with a love of sound through his father's music business and eventually began performing as a DJ. Dylan studied at SAE Technology College and in 2000 completed a Degree in Recording Arts with First Class Honors.

Sound Designer / IT Support

Sandy's early interest in audio grew into a hobby as a DJ and led to a Diploma in Music Industry & Technical Production at RMIT University. He came on board in 2006 to run our machine room but his inventive production skills quickly became apparent and before long he was engineering his own sessions, while also being our go-to guy for IT issues and entertaining us with his dry wit. Sandy's been in the sound designer's chair for a while now and is building up an impressive showreel, including a prize-winner at the London International Awards.

Sound Designer

Keen to start a career in sound, Matt began a Diploma of Audio Production at SAE Technology College in 2005. He excelled in his studies and went on to complete a Bachelor of Audio Production with Honours. Matt came to work part-time with us while he was studying and took up our invitation to join full-time in 2008.

Receptionist / Client Services

Casey is ideally suited to her role in reception, having worked with Qantas in tourism, hospitality and training. Since joining us in 2008, Casey's proved to be a quiet achiever and is now in charge of all things from administration to providing excellent client service. While keeping the front office running smoothly and juggling phone calls, couriers and the daily mail, Casey can still find time to make sure our visitors are warmly welcomed and well supplied with coffees, teas, lollies and lunches; all accomplished in her own laid-back way that'

Risk Mascot

Letaba, meaning 'River of Sand', has been a trusty companion to Kath since joining the Momsen household as a three-month old puppy. These days, more often than not, you'll find her sitting by Kath's side in the office, quietly observing proceedings. She's a Rhodesian Ridgeback, which is a breed indigenous to Africa and originally developed to track lions and bail them up until the hunter arrived. However, being gentle at heart, they were also bred to protect the family, and that, together with her other endearing traits, is why we've adopted Letaba as our mascot.

It's no good producing a great commercial or soundtrack if it doesn't get on air. From your first phone call through to despatch, we have systems to ensure on-time delivery. It's all part of a range of ancillary services we provide. To organise whatever you require, just chat to one of our producers.

Video & Audio Conversions

We have dedicated software and hardware for audio and video conversions, which can be provided in any of the widely used file formats.

If the concept calls for original music, we manage all aspects of the composition and production for you.

Our composers offer a range of musical styles and we can present recommendations for your consideration. Once the direction is agreed and you are happy for us to go ahead, we will create and produce a track that meets the requirements of your brief. There's a big advantage in us being involved in the composition of an original music track.

Dustin is a versatile pianist, composer and producer. In 2001 he completed a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, and has since been composing and producing for commercials, films, computer games and albums.

Dustin also records and tours, nationally and internationally, with a wide variety of acts. He has collaborated in the past with Eddie Perfect (comedy) and The Red Eyes (dub) among others. Dustin is currently working with Liz Cavanagh (jazz), The Putbacks (funk and soul), TZU (hip hop) and The Bamboos (funk and soul).

Sandy Milne and Joel Church met in 2006 while studying sound production at RMIT University, Melbourne.

Shaun has composed, performed and produced soundtracks for TV and radio commercials, film and multimedia in a career spanning more than two decades. He studied classical guitar with noted classical guitarist and teacher Sebastian Jorgenson at the Montsalvat Artists Colony.

Shaun has fronted Melbourne-based band 21-20 for the past 17 years or so. In 1999, he was invited to be the front-man for Channel 7's house band on 'Live and Kicking' and made frequent appearances on Channel 10's 'Good Morning Australia'.

Kit presents a fresh new sound in commercial music. Winner of the inaugural national ABC Underscore competition for young composers, he has gone on to produce original music for the ABC, SBS and Channel 10.

Kit completed a Bachelor of Arts with distinction at RMIT University, Melbourne, majoring in sound art. He composes for a wide range of audiences and musical projects, from intricate soundscapes to intelligent blends of grooves, beats and melodic riffs that add contemporary appeal to commercials.
